Getting into Bhutan by Road
Phuntsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar are the only land border areas open for international tourists.
The town of Phuntsholing is located approximately 170 km east of the Indian national airport Bagdogra.
Samdrup Jongkhar is the only entry point in eastern Bhutan. The town borders the Indian district of Darranga, Assam and is approximately 150 kms away from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. Tourists entering Bhutan through Samdrup Jongkhar have to travse via Trashigang and from there over the lateral route to Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa, Wangde Phodrang and then finally into capital, Thimphu. The total distance covered is approximately 700 kms and it will take a minumum of three days to reach Thimphu.
Traveling within Bhutan
There are two domestic flights which flies within Bhutan. It flies to Yonphula which is in the eastern Bhutan and Bumthang in central Bhutan.
The other mode of traveling within Bhutan is by road. All the major towns in the 20 districts of Bhutan are accessible by road, BMV Tours guests will be provided with comfortable coaches, medium-sized vans, MPVs or luxurious SUV with driver for the duration of your stay. This cost is included in the daily tariff. However, traveling by local or inter-district bus or taxi can also be organised.
Restricted area (Route) Permit
If you wish to travel to places other than Thimphu and Paro (permit free zone), you will have to obtain route permit from the immigration office in Thimphu (T-323127/F-321078.), for the tourists visiting Bhutan through BMV Tours, the route permits are issued with the visa copy.
Bringing in your own vehicle
Indian visitors can bring in their own vehicles. For the entry of the foreign cars, the Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA): www.rsta.gov.bt will have to endorse the documents. But we strongly recommend that you use our cars and the services of the local drivers as the narrow and winding roads in Bhutan may pose a challenge for you.
